It may be a very bad Christmas (or other religious holiday) for the Montrealers (in the Canadian province of Quebec) who were used on going to the Vans Warped Tour at Jean Drapeau Park (Parc Jean-Drapeau) each summer. Next summer – their punk rock “lifeblood” will been “severed”. Translation: there will not be a Warped Tour stop in Montreal in 2013.
The organizers at the Vans Warped Tour along with the promoter, Evenko has decided to take the 2013 edition of the Vans Warped Tour – off the road. There are some “unknown” reasons on why the organizers have decided to pull the plug on the 2013 edition of the Vans Warped Tour.
A quick look at Evenko’s Facebook page explains as follows:
“Together with the Vans Warped Tour team, evenko has taken the decision not to hold a 2013 edition of the event in Montreal. Please understand that this was not an easy decision to come to as the evenko team has had a hand in presenting the tour since its very beginning 18 years ago. However, interest for the event in the Montreal market over the past few years has not been strong enough to justify the production of an event of its magnitude. We welcome your suggestions and comments as we are committed to bringing you the best events possible.”
A subsequent look on Kevin Lyman’s twitter page goes as follows:
We are planning a special show in Montreal later in the summer.. putting it together now
That special show still remains a mystery. Will it be something similar to the “Taste of Chaos” and/or the “Mayhem Festival”? Only time will tell. The only Canadian stop that will go ahead as planned is – Toronto. That tour stop will be at “The Flats at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre” (as it had this past summer) on July 5th, 2013.
As for people living in the Montreal area – they will have to make the drive along the Highway 401 or take the Megabus to Toronto. Also this year – they will be no early-bird pre-sales on March and April. The pre-sale is actually taking place right now (at the time of this blog posting) this year. To learn more on how to get tickets for the 2013 edition of the Vans Warped Tour and to inquire about “general information” about the 2013 edition of the Vans Warped Tour, visit www.warpedtour.com
Here’s a promo video for the 2013 edition of the Vans Warped Tour:
As for the bands, they have not yet finalized at the time of this blog posting. I will post those at a later date. I will keep you posted for further details.
Enjoy your weekend, folks (unless you are living in Montreal and are mourning the loss of this “lifeblood”….)
Warped hasn’t been punk since forever, it has become a joke among older fans in Montreal. and us punks will survive by going to amazing locally promoted festivals like PouzzaFest and Detox Rockfest. Our life blood is far from severed.
Warped Tour has ran its course (pun intended) for the older generations of the concert crowd nowadays and some artists outside of punk joined in as well – metal artists and electronic-music artists.
Speaking of metal, I heard that Heavy MTL is popular in the Montreal music scene. A brief experiment was introduced in Toronto (dubbed Heavy T.O.) back in 2011 and 2012. Not sure if Heavy T.O. will be on the road again this year.
Remember when the Virgin Festival was going nationally? Although it was successful in the previous years, 2009 was the worse year for the V-Fest. The Halifax leg of the concert was turned into a “free” festival, the Vancouver stop was shortened because of the weather and we must not forget that there was controversy about where the Toronto leg should take place.
While the Toronto leg was supposed to take place in a community just north of Barrie (at a place called Oro-Medonte at Burl’s Creek Park), there was some backlash and protests from the Toronto area about the concert. Another factor is transportation/logistical issues.
As a result, the Toronto leg was moved to the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto – at the last minute by the Virgin Festival organizers.
Since then, the V-Fest had ran its course thesedays. It seems that many festivals couldn’t deal in today’s economy.
